Does Coconut Oil Really Do All It Claims To? I Put It To The Test!

Discovering a daily moisturizer that works for your skin type and your makeup routine is surely something to celebrate. It definitely gets exhausting, though, when just as you’ve found your own holy grail product, the magazines start to buzz about another! It makes you wonder, "do all of these things actually work?”

Well, Fashionistas, I’ve got your back. I've volunteered as tribute to be your personal buzz-product test monkey. The latest superhero of the beauty world? Coconut oil. After swapping my daily moisturizer out for this proclaimed multitasker for 2 whole weeks, was I converted into a coconut oil believer? Check out below to see!

To give you some background info, the moisturizer I’m replacing is very simple— cocoa butter. From head to toe, it’s all I’ve ever trusted. When I’m feeling especially disciplined, I’ll also wear a thin layer of Dr. Murad’s sunscreen. I wear makeup every day, so my skin products absolutely must work well with my routine. The coconut oil I purchased is as natural and raw as it gets, so let’s see how this goes!

Day 1: At first use, I noticed that oil smells so good! It melts in the hand and feels like a thick serum when it’s applied. A pea-sized amount of product is more than enough. Afterwards, my face felt undeniably soft and smooth!

Day 4: I was absolutely loving how supple my skin felt! That is until I had an allergic reaction. Considering the fact that this only has one ingredient (which I think is a great thing), it was not hard to pinpoint what my skin was reacting to. Fashionistas, I highly recommend trying products on your arm for a few days before trusting it on your face; even natural products can disagree with our skin sometimes. I didn’t let a few itchy patches stop the experiment though! *Beyonce voice* Carry on.

Day 7: In the midst of a busy morning, I definitely appreciated the oil’s quick absorption. The short wait between moisturizing and starting my makeup routine (which I spent admiring how radiant my skin looked all of a sudden) was cut down to just a few seconds.

Day 10: I am seriously considering making this my full-time moisturizer. Such dry, harsh weather really calls for an all-star oil like this. I’ve been using it on my face, hands, cuticles, elbows, lips, in my hair, to remove makeup- you name it! It is truly a new favorite of mine, despite my skin’s original disapproval. They weren’t kidding when they put “head-to-toe nourishing hydration” on the label. Is coconut oil included in Barbara Kipfer’s 14,000 Things to Be Happy About, you ask? Yes, yes it is.

Week 2: Overall, coconut oil is no one-trick pony! The most enjoyable effects of this 2-week trial have been my skin’s new radiant glow, and the way the oil nourished my lips under an abusively dry lipstick. Even if you Fashionistas are hooked on your own favorite moisturizer, now you have 99 other reasons to try out coconut oil!
