The main purpose of toner is to remove excess residue that's been left behind after you've washed your face. Some are even known to get rid of dead skin on the outermost layer of your face and neck (come through, glow)! If you still think you don't need one, trust me– you'd be surprised how much a white towel, cotton pad, or an extra makeup removing wipe can reveal. That's not all!–
Due to their sequential place in a skincare lineup, I like to call toners "the makeup primers of skincare". They are meant to be applied after your everyday facial cleanser, but before the rest of your routine (morning and/or night). As expected, removing the icky barrier over your pores and revealing a fresher skin surface maximizes the potential of any products you use afterwards. Though you'll sometimes see them labeled as an essence, booster, or even a lotion, their texture will reveal to you that it is indeed a toner, and their aforementioned common goal is the same.
Their fluid, water-like consistency allow them to be applied very gently and absorb quickly, without clogging your pores. I prefer to apply toner with a cotton pad (since disposable applicators are more sanitary than our hands), but it is also perfectly normal to pour a few drops of the liquid into your palms, and apply it directly to your face with a gentle patting or pressing motion.
Overall, toners are the affordable, easily-approachable, underrated "Step 2" of a routine, and can really give your skincare the effective boost you've been looking for. Nowadays, toners have several different purposes– hydrating, acne-fighting, brightening, firming, redness-fighting, you name it. Choosing the right one for you is only a matter of knowing your individual needs and concerns!
